Religion and Worldviews
North Bradley CE Primary School Religion and Worldviews
Our Intent
As a Church of England School, the Christian faith is the foundation of everything we do at North Bradley. In all learning and wider school experiences, we aim to fulfil our school vision and values. Within our school and community, we provide an environment where all the children feel safe, valued, included and accepted as individuals. We believe it is fundamental for our children to belong to a safe and nurturing community, founded on strong Christian values. Our children develop an array of skills that will enable them to shine as lights in the world and make their own positive contributions to our global society.
At North Bradley CE Primary School, we believe the teaching of Religion and Worldviews is vital for the development of each child as an individual. Religion and Worldviews empowers them to become understanding, tolerant and respectful citizens, who demonstrate British Values. By teaching Christianity and other world religions, we promote respect, inclusion and open-mindedness towards all faiths and beliefs. We want to encourage pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. Our Religion and Worldviews curriculum contributes to these essential elements of knowledge, core concepts and the underpinning theology. At North Bradely CE School, we share thought provoking and enjoyable learning experiences. We deliver challenging and effective RE to pupils. We encourage them to use high order thinking skills that will impact on all their learning, not only in RE but across all subjects. Our curriculum develops children’s understanding and appreciation of world religions and worldviews in the local, national and wider global community.
Our Implementation for our Religion and Worldviews Curriculum
As a Church of England Primary School, Religion and Worldviews is a core subject within our curriculum. At least 50% of each year groups curriculum focuses on Christianity, whilst the remaining 50% is used for different Religions and Worldviews. We teach Religion and Worldviews according to the New Wiltshire Agreed Syllabus. We use resources from The Emmanual Project, Understanding Christianity, Oak National Academy and RE Today to support our Teaching.
In Foundation Stage, the children begin to understand and recognise that people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in their lives in a variety of ways. Children are given opportunities to engage with religious and cultural communities during appropriate times of the year. The Emmanual Project is used to introduce the Christian concepts of Creation, Salvation and Incarnation. Additionally, during these units, the children encounter different faiths. Continuous Provision is supported by The Emmanual Project and Understanding Christianity.
As children move through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, they build upon the core Christian concepts introduced in the Foundation Stage. These core concepts tell the ‘Big Story’ of the Bible and are taught through enquiry questions. As a result of our strong links with the church, our children are able to enjoy first-hand experiences and deepen their understanding of Christianity. During Key Stage 1 , the children learn about Judaism, Islam and are introduced to Humanism. As the children move into Key Stage 2, they continue to build on their learning about Judaism, Islam and Humanism. They are also introduced to Sikhism and Santana Dharma.
We enrich our teaching by including aspects of the following;
- Exploring sacred texts
- Handling related artefacts
- Organising whole school events; productions, Church services of celebration etc
- Visiting key religious sites and using the internet to support this when it's not possible
- Inviting visitors from key religious communities
- Using drama and imaginative play to express ideas
- Responding to and creating; art, music, dance, images, games and stories
- Debating big questions through theological thinking.
The Impact of our Religion and Worldviews Curriculum
By the time children leave North Bradley CE Primary School they:
- Know about and understand Christianity as a living world faith, by having explored core theological concepts.
- Have developed knowledge and skills in making sense of biblical texts and understanding how they impact the lives of Christians.
- Can make connections between their own growing understanding of religion, themselves, the world and human experience.
- Have gained knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews and how this informs how people see the world and live.
- Are sensitive and respectful to others beliefs. They are able to express their own views well, show curiosity and have the skills to ask appropriate questions when meeting people different to themselves.
